New Tools for Peace Mediation: MAS ETH Mediation in Peace Processes Introduces Innovative Materials

The MAS ETH Mediation in Peace Processes (MAS ETH MPP) program has introduced a series of multimedia tools designed to help mediators worldwide refine their skills and make peace processes more effective.

The new package includes four key components:

  1. Mediation Skills Card Set: A set of 34 cards that convey key competencies in communication, attitude, and process structuring. The cards can be downloaded as a PDF or requested in physical form at masmediation@ethz.ch.
  2. Video Demonstrations of Micro-Skills: In exclusive video interviews, renowned mediators external page Zaza Elsheikh and external page Christopher Moore exemplify using micro-skills such as asking questions and reframing and share their experiences on key competencies such as empathic listening, non-verbal communication, and managing conflict situations. They also provide practical tips for aspiring mediators.
  3. Animated Mediation Model: A visual introduction to the Five Phase Model of Mediation which explains the structured flow of a mediation process. The animation is available in multiple languages, including external page Arabic, external page Chinese, external page English, external page French, external page German, external page Russian and external page Spanish.
  4. Two Enacted Documentaries Show Practical Mediations: The external page enacted documentaries showcase expert mediators Zaza Elsheikh and Christopher Moore mediating simulated disputes – One focusing on a neighborhood dispute and the other on a conflict between a mining company and a local community. The films demonstrate the application of the five phases of mediation and relevant micro-skills in realistic scenarios. The video with Zaza Elsheikh also includes graphic annotations highlighting dozens of key mediator decisions and practices.

These new resources not only provide valuable insights into professional mediation techniques but also offer practical support for peace mediators in conflict areas and learning tools for mediation training.

Interested individuals can explore the materials on the program’s official website and use them for their work.

Developing such knowledge and tools for the broader peace mediation community is an important part of the mandate of the MAS ETH Mediation in Peace Processes . The program was established in 2017 by Switzerland, Germany, Finland, and the UN.

Admissions for the program are now open. Find more information on the program’sofficial website.
