Dr. Corinne Bara is a Senior Researcher in conflict studies at the Center for Security Studies (CSS). She uses computational methods to study various aspects of armed conflict and political violence. One focus is on conflict management strategies, such as peace operations or ceasefire agreements, and how they impact armed actors’ violent behaviour. She also studies the use of siege warfare in contemporary armed conflicts. In addition, she is developing a new project at the intersection of data science, humanitarian assistance, and conflict research. The project aims to leverage satellite imagery and machine learning for the early detection of humanitarian crises.
Corinne is also affiliated with the Department of Peace and Conflict Research (DPCR) at Uppsala University, where she served as an Assistant Professor prior to joining the CSS in 2023. During her tenure there, she led a project funded by the Swedish Research Council, evaluating the effects of ceasefire agreements on violence dynamics in civil wars. She is also co-investigator in a project at Uppsala University that examines why certain civil wars are exponentially more destructive than others.
Corinne received her PhD from ETH Zürich in 2016, and holds an MA in Political Science and Humanitarian Law from the University of Zürich. Prior to pursuing her PhD, she worked in the Human Security division of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs. She has also been a researcher in the CSS’ Risk and Resilience Team, where she contributed research and policy advice on disaster risk analysis with a focus on social vulnerability to disasters.
