Jennifer Victoria Scurrell is a PhD candidate at the Center for Security Studies (CSS) at ETH Zurich. Her research interest centers on Human-AI Interaction, AI supported influence operations (information operations), and responsible AI. In 2023, Jennifer was a PhD research intern at Microsoft Research (HQ Redmond, WA, USA). She is a passionate red teamer for generative AI systems.
Jennifer is a member of the external page Digital Society Initiative (DSI) Democracy at the University of Zurich, the Research Software Engineering Community, ETH Chapter, and the external page Computational Methods Working Group (CMWG) at the University of Zurich and ETH Zurich.
Prior to joining CSS, Jennifer worked as a research collaborator at the Military Academy at ETH Zurich (MILAK). Associated with the social media research project, she analyzed the Swiss armed forces’ communication strategies in relation to military cadre. Jennifer was also a teaching assistant for Political Methodology, Political Philosophy and Modern History at the University of Zurich.
Jennifer holds an MA in Political Science and a BA in Political Science and Modern History from the University of Zurich. During her MA, she specialized in Computational Social Science. For her MA thesis, she used deep learning to analyze visual political communication. During her BA, she completed an internship at the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium, contributing to the EU’s GDPR. She subsequently worked for the Belgian government in the area of foreign, regional, and diplomatic affairs.
