European Grand Strategy in an Era of Geopolitical Change

Dr. Michiel Foulon

2020 - 2022

This project explores the main challenges to developing a coherent European grand strategy in an era of significant and rapid geopolitical change. It brings together researchers and policy practitioners from Switzerland, Brussels, and elsewhere to network and share insights.

This research project investigates the following questions: Is a European grand strategy feasible, given the numerous internal divisions that plague Europe? How are geopolitical changes and internal challenges affecting attempts to formulate a European grand strategy? Which type of grand strategy should Europe pursue: strategic autonomy, continued dependence on Washington’s security guarantee, or some middle course? What is the interplay between security, trade and diplomacy in the making of European grand strategy? How can Europe utilize the full range of instruments in its toolkit in developing a coherent grand strategy?
