Dr. Valerie Sticher

Dr. Valerie Sticher combines academic research and more than ten years of practitioner experience to support opposing parties in the transition from war to negotiated peace. Her PhD research at Leiden University focused on the role of ceasefires as strategic bargaining instruments. In her ongoing SNSF Postdoc.Mobility research project, she investigates how artificial intelligence affects bargaining dynamics in peace processes. Her research has been published in leading international peer-reviewed journals, including International Studies Quarterly, International Studies Review, and the Journal of Peace Research.
Valerie is currently a visiting scholar at the external page School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University. At the CSS, she co-leads the external page Remote Monitoring of Armed Conflicts research project, a collaboration between the EcoVision Lab, the CSS, the International Committee of the Red Cross and other partners. She is also a member of the Ceasefire Project, a collaboration between the CSS, Uppsala University and PRIO. Valerie was previously a senior program officer at the CSS Mediation Support Team and worked for the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste.
