The West is concerned about events in Kazakhstan. Russia and especially China also have interests in the country. CSS' Benno Zogg explains for Berliner Zeitung that the Russian troops, who have been sent to Kazakhstan, are mostly there as a signal – to the protesters and to the elite. He also explains that China’s Belt and Road Initiative is currently hardly under threat, because it is flexible and without alternative.
