This edition considers the position of and challenges facing Gazprom in its most important markets. Firstly, Kateryna Boguslavska analyses Gazprom’s position on the Russian domestic market in light of legislative changes to liberalise the market and growing competition from independent gas producers. Secondly, Ingerid M. Opdahl focuses on the post-Soviet space, noting that while Gazprom is losing ground in some countries, it continues to holds a stable position in others. Thirdly, Elena Kropatcheva examines the impact of the European Commission’s antitrust inquiry into Gazprom’s practices on Gazprom’s role in the EU energy market, concluding that strong mutual interdependence will limit any significant impact. Fourthly, Andrei V. Belyi considers the competition between Gazprom and Rosneft to gain a greater role in Asian gas markets, suggesting that current conditions continue to favour Gazprom.
