Mediation Support and Peace Promotion

As part of its contribution to promoting peace and international security, the CSS has developed a thematic expertise on mediation. As a tool for addressing conflict, mediation can be understood as a process where an acceptable third party supports conflict parties in negotiating an agreement. Applicable in a wide-range of settings, the Center is particularly interested in the relevance of mediation to addressing violent political conflict in conflict-affected and fragile contexts.

We strive to be an internationally-recognized center of expertise encompassing the three components of skills, topics and process design and identify gaps in these areas in order to develop research and apply good mediation practice. Our three topical areas of expertise are (i) religion and conflict (ii) security issues and (iii) women’s participation.
